CHALLENGE

Our economy is designed around buying new. Even when products still have value, replacement often feels easier and more desirable than reuse.

Second-hand carries emotional and social friction. Giving something away can feel like losing value, while choosing something used can feel like settling for less. Sustainable alternatives can also appear niche, inconvenient or dependent on someone’s spending power.

The challenge was not only to prevent waste. It was to change how people value the things already in circulation and make reuse feel desirable, rewarding and open to everyone.

STRATEGY

SwapShare created a simple community model: bring quality items, receive points and use those points to choose something new to you.

Positioned as a premium exchange open to everyone, SwapShare is not a charity shop or another lesson in sustainable consumption, but the optimistic instigator of a swap revolution.

The points system preserves value. The curated experience builds trust. And the brand gives swapping the colour, energy and desirability usually reserved for buying new.

Second-hand exchange, made to feel first-rate.

SECOND-HAND EXCHANGE, MADE PREMIUM

The case film shows how SwapShare changed the perception of swapping by adding a clear value system and a brand designed around both sides of every exchange.

PREMIUM IN EXPERIENCE. EQUAL IN ACCESS.

FROM BRAND TO BEHAVIOUR.

🌱

The identity was never the end product. It helped translate SwapShare’s community model into a clear and desirable experience across screens, streets and pop-up spaces. A better image lowered the social barrier. A simple and fair system gave people a reason to participate and return.

RESPONSE

From a better image to better behaviour.

SwapShare turns circularity into a simple and repeatable exchange: bring quality items, receive credits and discover something new to you.

The brand makes second-hand feel organised, desirable and trustworthy. The points system preserves the value of what people contribute and allows credits to be used immediately or saved for a future pop-up, creating a reason to return.

Because money plays no role in the exchange, access is based on contribution rather than spending power. And because swapping takes place in shared local spaces, every pop-up keeps products in circulation while bringing neighbours together.

IMPACT

Environmental. Behavioural. Social.

  • 25 pop-ups
    across Amsterdam, Utrecht and Haarlem
  • 2,000+ residents
    connected through swapping
  • 30,000+ items
    kept in circulation
  • 45,000 kg of waste
    avoided
  • 180,000 kg of CO₂
    avoided
  • 80% of visitors
    swapped for the first time

Returning visitors saved credits for future events, showing that participation continued beyond a single pop-up.

Not a campaign telling people
to consume differently.
A system that lets them practise it.
